The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5052 is once more sponsoring an essay contest for students in the Tahoma School District as well as those that are home schooled. There are a lot of monetary prizes available on the local, district, state, and national level (up to $30,000!).
Contest rules and entry forms can be found on the VFW website, www.VFW.org/programs. There are 3 different categories: grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. All entries are due on November 1 so get those essays started! Email me at email@example.com if you need assistance.
The post has been awarded a $1000 grant that is earmarked for the repair of the parking lot at the Cedar Grange in Old Maple Valley. Upon learning that the V.F.W. National Headquarters had grant monies available to local posts for the purpose of community betterment projects, the membership directed Commander Stephens to apply for the maximum amount and his proposal was accepted for the project. Terry Beckler, the Grange Director and member of the post, is coordinating with a contractor to do the work as soon as weather permits. More about this later.
In other news, a Go-Fund-Me account has been set up to help the Grange pay off a $10,000 note that was necessary to pay for the balance of the cost ($20,000) of the new roof that was installed last year. We are asking the community to join with us to help them by donating any amount to reach their goal. You can do this by accessing the link,
Cedar Grange Hall – **New Roof** by Terry Beckler. The Grange supports many organizations in the community, at little or no cost, including, the Famous Pancake Breakfast, V.F.W. Post 5052, 3 boy scout troops, 3 girl scout troops, the Church of Grace, 1 4-H club, the John Wayne Horse Club, Back Country Horsemen, a Karate class, the Lake Sawyer Hawks, nine different square dance groups, a painting class for seniors, and the Grange itself. All of these meet here making the facility a major partner in the community.
And still more news, our post members will be at Fred Meyer at 4 Corners on Good Friday and Saturday selling Buddy Poppies that will replenish our Relief Fund that is used for helping our veterans in the V.A. Hospital, the U.S.O., Fisher House, and the Old Soldier’s Home in Orting among others. Please stop by and support our efforts.
