The Secret of Contentment

Lasting contentment is something that everyone longs for, but few find. The reason is not because they don’t understand the definition of contentment, which is simply being satisfied with what you have, but rather, trying to find contentment in seeking after things you don’t have.

How many people do you know, including yourself, that seem to base their contentment on material things? For example, people often say their lives would be better off if they only had a larger income, a bigger house, a nicer car, or more vacation time. Does this sound familiar?

The truth is, no matter how much you have, it will never bring lasting contentment, you will always be in want of the next thing. The Bible tells us: “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10. The issue is not the abundance of money or things, or the lack of them, but rather trying to find contentment in them.

If contentment is being satisfied with whatever we have, how do we get there? The Apostle Paul answered this saying: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength” – Philippians 4:11-13.

The Apostle Paul explained that the secret of contentment is only found in Jesus Christ. When you understand what it means to have a relationship with Him, you will find contentment not only in what you have, but in the circumstance that you find yourself in. Are you content?
