In 1972 Nixon declared August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day. He said: “For all that, they have achieved throughout their lives and for all that they continue to do, we owe our gratitude and sincere greetings to our senior citizens. We can show our gratitude and appreciation better by making sure our communities are good places. Age and maturity, places where older people can participate as much as possible and find the encouragement, acceptance, support and services they need to continue living a life of independence and dignity.
This is a photo from the Maple Valley Senior Center on how they celebrated this day on Wednesday, August 21st. They held a hula hoop contest, and a bubble gum bubble blowing contest. They even taught people how to do the ‘hand jive’. It was loads of fun and great food with hamburgers, fries, watermelon and root beer floats.
