Making Art out of Covid

The Black Diamond Arts Alliance has been keeping paintbrushes wet throughout the Covid shutdowns.

Member artists of numerous disciplines have combined forces to contribute to the spirit of Black Diamond, creating a “mosaic” interpretation of an iconic symbol.

The group decided to collectively paint an image of the Black Diamond Bakery. A photo image was divided into equal portions, and the quickest of the members were assigned a “tile” of the image. Twelve members of the BDAA have produced a united image that will be on public display, starting with the reopening of the Black Diamond Historical Museum, Saturday, October 31. The mosaic will move to various locations within Black Diamond, with its final location yet to be determined.

“Like many other organizations and nonprofits, we had to take a step back from normal operations and set new goals to support and sustain membership,” said BDAA President Patricia Moss. “The project has been so successful that we are considering  continuing this as an annual tradition, using iconic Black Diamond scenes.”

The twelve artists who contributed to the mosaic are:

Barbara Benedetti-Newton Jill Erickson , Laura Scheuffele, Linda Wentz, Lydia Sutton, Lynn Kopelke, Marsha Julson, Mickey Culver, Mira Hoke, Miriam Woito, Patricia Moss, Patricia Doyle.

“Everyone is invited to view the finished mosaic during the Museum Re-opening,” said Keith Watson, President of the Black Diamond Historical Society. “There will be lots of art and historical displays that reveal the character and skills of the Black Diamond community.”
