Last week’s column highlighted efforts to market coal to the University of Washington from the Landsburg mine in Ravendale. This week features Hubert Kravagna taking a bite from his sandwich during a lunch break, hundreds of feet underground. When this Feb. 1953 photo was taken, Kravagna was 51-years-old and had worked in area coal mines since age 15. Hubert was born in Resse, Germany in 1901, and at age eight, immigrated with his parents to America. The family settled in Black Diamond where his father, Anton Kravagna found work in the coal mines until his retirement. Hubert would do the same retiring from Palmer Coking Coal Co. in 1966, after a 49-year mining career. Hubert and his wife, Lottie raised two sons, John and Charles, and two daughters Marilyn (Johnson) and JoAnn. He died in January 1978. About 40 men worked in the Landsburg mine at the time of this Roy Scully photo. To learn more about Landsburg and related mining operations, go to www.HistoryLink.org and type Danville in the search box.
