Reagan Dunn Honors Tahoma Cross Country Teams for Stunning Double Victory

King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn on Thursday presented a proclamation to the Tahoma High School boys and girls cross country teams to honor and congratulate both teams on winning first place in this year’s 4A Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association Cross Country State Meet.

“I am so proud that Tahoma High School athletes took home not just one, but two state championships,” Dunn said. “It’s a stunning achievement, and a real cause to celebrate during what has been a very challenging year for both students and teachers. Congratulations to the Tahoma boys and girls cross country teams!”

The meet was held virtually due to COVID-19. All teams ran in separate locations and submitted their times.The THS girls cross country team won with a score of 36, and the boys cross country team won with a score of 89.

“The Maple Valley City Council takes great pride in making sure we have open space where all citizens, including our young athletes, can feel safe while enjoying our outdoor facilities and trails,” said Mayor Sean P. Kelly.

Several local elected officials joined Councilmember Dunn for the presentation of the proclamation, including Maple Valley Mayor Sean P. Kelly, Deputy Mayor Dana Parnello, Councilmember Linda Johnson, City Manager Laura Philpot, Tahoma School District Assistant Superintendent Lori Cloud, Tahoma School Board President Malia Hollowell, and Tahoma School Board Member Tami Henkel.

PROCLAMATION 

            WHEREAS, the Tahoma High School cross country boys and girls teams are the 2021 State Champions, having won the 4A Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association Virtual Cross Country State Meet; and 

WHEREAS, the “virtual” state meet, in which teams ran separately and submitted their times, was open to all 4A schools that wanted to participate and had a complete team; and

WHEREAS, because the state tournament couldn’t be hosted in-person due to COVID-19, the participating teams ran 3.1 miles (5,000 meters) on the track, which equals 12.5 laps; and

WHEREAS, it has been a difficult time for both athletes and coaches, with the track season cancelled last year and the fall cross country season pushed to the spring; and

WHEREAS, given the restrictions of competing in person, teammates and coaches continually motivated and inspired each other to keep training and met for drills, which were instrumental to their success; and

WHEREAS, a dual state champion team is an amazing accomplishment; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, King County Council Vice Chair Reagan Dunn, recognize and congratulate

Tahoma High School Cross Country Teams

for their dedication to fitness and teamwork, particularly during a worldwide pandemic.
