AN ENCOURAGING WORD: Fear Not!

Esther Pauline “Eppie” Lederer, better known by the pen name Ann Landers, for the syndicated newspaper column, Ask Ann Landers, would receive, on average, ten thousand letters each month – nearly all of them from people with problems. She was asked if there was one predominant theme in the letters she received. She said, “The one problem above all others seems to be fear. People are afraid of losing their health, their wealth, and their loved ones. People are afraid of life itself.”

It is true, fear stifles many people.   For some, fear becomes so consuming that it keeps them from enjoying all the things God has given us to enjoy, especially fellowship and relationships with others, and most importantly, with Him.  When this happens, fear snuffs out life.

Now don’t get me wrong, some fear is good.  For instance, the Bible says we are to “fear the Lord.”  The fear the Lord turns us from evil Proverbs 3:7 says.  We should fear God’s righteous judgment upon sin, but those who have trusted Christ no longer have a fear of death or eternal judgment. 1 Corinthians 15:55–57 says, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

A correct understanding of fear and a reconciled relationship with God changes fear into faith. When we go through difficulties and experience loss and suffer the emotions that naturally arise with them, we are assured from God’s Word not to fear because He is with us.  Listen to what He says concerning those who He calls His own: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.” – Isaiah 43:1. Notice God does not say He will take you out of the difficulty, rather He says He will be with you through it, and you will not be overcome.   These are comforting truths to be reminded of in this moment of history.
