Future students and their families, school district staff, Oakpointe representatives and other dignitaries gathered Friday, June 26, for the official groundbreaking of Evergreen Elementary School at Ten Trails. The 11 a.m. ceremony, held on Ten Trails Parkway SE in Black Diamond, marked the start of construction on what will become the Enumclaw School District’s newest elementary school, serving the growing Ten Trails community.
The two-story building will eventually serve about 600 students, and is scheduled to open in fall 2027. Once complete, it will include classrooms for students from pre-K through fifth grade, a playground and a large field. A financial partnership between Oakpointe and the district is funding the school through private development investment rather than tax dollars.
“This project is a true collaboration between the School District, Oakpointe, and the City of Black Diamond,” said Kyle Fletcher, the district’s business director. “We believe this school will be a beacon for the community and provide a further unifying force between our School District and the cities of Black Diamond and Enumclaw.”
Fletcher noted that the planning for the school began long before the ceremony. “Today is about much more than turning dirt,” he said, pointing to the partnership and funding model developed “long before the first home was built.”
Outgoing Superintendent Jill Burnes echoed that sentiment, calling the project “an incredibly creative endeavor” made possible by Oakpointe and Black Diamond coming together. She added that while the effort will result in a new building, its significance goes further. “We’re building a school, but more importantly, we’re creating for future generations,” Burnes said.
The school’s name and Trailblazers mascot were chosen through the district’s naming committee. Nicole Tronvig has been named the school’s planning principal and will help shape its identity and community partnerships ahead of its opening.
