There are painters. There are poets. An ekphrastic connection between the two artistic expressions is defined as “a literary commentary inspired by a painting.” That term is coming to life in Black Diamond. One artistic expression will be a soundboard for another artist’s commentary, an ekphrastic poem.
Black Diamond Arts Alliance is hosting their annual Spring Art Show at Gomer Evans Masonic Center on two consecutive days. The show has nearly 60 paintings for public viewing and sale. In collaboration with the Unknown Poets Society, the Alliance is extending an invitation to all poets to expand their horizon through writing ekphrastic poetry.
The poets can view artwork on display Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and May 5. After penning quickly overnight or early morning, poets inspired by the visual art they see will compose a poem to match one or more artworks. Entry forms will be available at the front door. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. both days.
Certificates of award will be presented to all poets who submit two printed copies of each poem per painting. (One copy for the judges and one for the artist to treasure.) Honorable Mentions and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards will be chosen by the judges. The poets will all read their poems to the public on Sunday from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
A plant sale is also being featured at the Art Show, as is live music by the Steve Israel Duo. For more poetry information, contact Susan Etchey, coordinator of The Unknown Poets Society at azaroa1940@gmail.com or Patricia Moss, Art Show chairperson, at blackdiamondarts@outlook.com.
