AN ENCOURAGING WORD: On Eagle’s Wings

I heard some interesting facts about eagles the other day and discovered some very intriguing things.  Most intriguing was that when it comes time for training its offspring to fly, the female begins by throwing the eaglets out of the nest onto the area outside the nest.  Because they are scared they jump into the nest again.  Following this exercise, she takes off the soft layers of the nest exposing the thorny underside. When she throws the eaglets out and when they jump back into the nest they are pricked by thorns. This keeps them outside the nest. The next exercise is to push them off the cliff into the air.  All of this is part of their training to fly.

The most interesting thing is that when the eaglet is pushed over the cliff it does not know how to fly.  They fall and flail toward the ground and then something amazing happens, the father eagle swoops down and picks them up on his back before they reach the ground and brings them back to the cliff. This goes on for sometime until they start flapping their wings and soon learn to fly.

This is a great picture of how God teaches His children to trust.  Sometimes God has to push us out of the nest so that we can learn to fly.  The good news is, like the eagle, there is never a time that God lets us fall so far that He cannot pick us up again.  If the eagle never pushed the eaglets out of the nest, they would never become mature.  If God never put us in places where we needed to act in faith, we would never grow in our walk with Him.

We see this in the Old Testament book of Exodus, were we are given the record of God bringing His people, the Israelites, out from four hundred and thirty years of bondage in Egypt.  After He freed them, the Egyptians pursued them, yet God protected them and brought them through the Red Sea.  When they were at Mount Sinai, God reminded them of this event telling them “You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself.” – Exodus 19:4.

Whatever trial we face, God is in it and will not allow us to hit the ground, but will pick us up so that we can grow.  The more we are pushed out of the nest, the more we are able to soar in faith.
