On Saturday, July 17, King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn delivered a $25,000 Youth and Amateur Sports Grant to the City of Black Diamond to help build a new skate park as a replacement for one that was demolished earlier this year.
The Black Diamond Skate Park, constructed in 2007, was once a popular feature within Black Diamond. However, following years of deterioration that left the park beyond repair, it was torn down. Now, the City is attempting to raise the funds to build a new skate park, which is estimated to cost $300,000 to $600,000.
On May 20th, the Black Diamond City Council voted to approve a fundraising initiative that anyone can contribute to in order to help pay for a new skate park. This King County grant delivered by Councilmember Dunn is seed funding for this project as the first donation the new fund has received.
“I am very glad to help kick off the fundraising effort to rebuild a skate park in Black Diamond,” said Dunn. “This effort has seen great enthusiasm in the Black Diamond community, and I know a new skate park would be a treasured resource, just as the last one was.”
Black Diamond Councilmember Tamie Deady, who serves on the Public Works Committee and Planning and Development Committee stated “I’m excited about the funding that Councilmember Dunn was able to provide to the city as the donation to begin development of a new skate park in the city of Black Diamond. We’re a small city and our youth are excited to see this recreational amenity come back after our previous skate park needed to be removed.”
Mayor Carol Benson accepted the check on the City’s behalf at the 12th annual Black Diamond Miner’s Day festival. “We are so excited to get our first donation for replacing the skate park. Our hope is to get it constructed before the end of the year,” said Benson. “Councilmember Dunn has been so good to us in Black Diamond!”
