Betty Mahoney Passed Away

Betty Mahoney, 76, a 51-year resident of Maple Valley passed away June 28th of hyperthermia.

She is pre-deceased by her son Arthur Mahoney and survived by her daughter Marina Martin, son Adam Mahoney, daughter Amber Mahoney and grandchildren; Britta Martin, Reese Mahoney, and Sophia Staton.

She dearly loved her children and grandchildren and delighted in their antics and stories, always painting their behavior (good and bad) with a colorful brush.  A loyal friend and mother, she was always willing to lend an ear and as a lifelong Catholic, offer a prayer.

Betty doted on her pets (her other “kids”) and spent decades active in feral cat rescue work, single-handedly saving hundreds of animals over the course of her lifetime. She also liked country music (anything before the year 2000) and spent countless hours reading Western novels.

A native of Seattle, she also lived for periods in San Francisco and the Black Hills of South Dakota and loved to share stories of her memories from those days.

She retired in 2015 from the King County Housing Authority where she served as a case aanager.

Whether it was getting the family together for Christmas Zoolights at Point Defiance, or the 4th of July Rainier’s game at Cheney Stadium, Betty carried the torch of tradition for her family. As the torch is passed, Betty is most remembered for her kind heart and unwavering support of her family.  Her intense dedication, sacrifice, and hard work on behalf of her loved ones will be passed on.  She will be forever missed.

A memorial will be held for Betty at St. Barbara’s Church in Black Diamond.  A memorial bench along the Lake Wilderness Trail (her favorite walking spot) will be dedicated in her honor.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Betty’s honor to the Humane Society or animal rescue of your choice.
