Saturday at the Cinch Playoffs at the Puyallup Rodeo saw lots of thrills and spills with two action-packed performances.
On Saturday afternoon, the excitement started when bareback rider Mason Clements scored 85 points on Calgary Stampede’s Dirty Money. That earned the Spanish Fork, Utah, resident $3,600, money he needs for the world standings and to support his growing family. His wife, Brianna Clements gave birth to their first child, a girl, Charlee Mae, two weeks ago.
And if the stress of being a new father wasn’t enough, Clements is also on the bubble for a qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Prior to the Puyallup Rodeo, he was 18th and $20,000 out of the top 15 that qualify for rodeo’s championships. That margin could decrease significantly here.
Clements is among the eight bareback riders that will compete in the semifinals on Sunday and if he is among the top four from that round, he will be competing in the finals and have an opportunity to win $13,000.
The semifinals contestants will also earn money, so with what he has already won and the potential to add to it, Clements will be making a late-season push for his fourth NFR qualification. The regular season for rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association ends September 30.
One contestant that is definitely heading to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championships and is hoping to add the Cinch Playoffs title to his resume is bull rider Garrett Smith. He has competed in Las Vegas for a world title three times but hasn’t been there since 2019.
Smith was fourth in the world standings before he got to Puyallup. Then he rode two bulls here and has a chance to narrow the gap. He scored 82 and 81 points in the two performances on Saturday and will start the semifinals as one of the most consistent bull riders in the field.
Semifinals rodeo contestants all start with an even playing field at the Washington State Fair so they will all be working to have fast times and high scores and advance to the finals where they will again start at zero. At the end of the rodeo, winners will receive a championship package that includes a trophy saddle and buckle. The competition will begin in the grandstand at 1 p.m. and will be aired on the Cowboy Channel and Cowboy Channel Plus app.
