Maple View Middle School students just got some AMAZING new learning tools, thanks to the Southeast King School Retirees’ Association! The Association awarded FOURTEEN $200 mini-grants to Maple View staff members to use for classrooms and other spaces. Maple View was next in line for the grant, which is awarded to a Tahoma school every five years.
Nathan Oliver, who teaches 6th-grade math and science, used his grant money to purchase multiplication flash cards and team-building games that teach social and emotional skills. “When my sixth-graders were in the fourth grade, that’s the year COVID hit. That’s when they would have started learning their multiplication facts,” Nathan explained. “In one of my classes, EVERY kid said they wished they knew their multiplication facts. Now, students grab the cards and start quizzing each other for fun.”
Krystal Shook teaches 7th-grade Language Arts and Social Studies. With her grant money, Krystal purchased art supplies so students could “recreate the painting techniques and calligraphy from Imperial China” and create a learning experience that’s “better than only reading the textbooks and answering questions.”
Thank you to the Washington State School Retirees Association (WSSRA) for supporting Tahoma students and staff! #TahomaCARES #Partnerships
