Superintendent Mike Hanson Resignation Letter to Tahoma School District

Below is the letter Mike Hanson sent out regarding his resignation

Dear Tahoma Family,

Maple Valley and Tahoma have been home to me for most of my life. I’m a blessed graduate of Tahoma High School’s Class of 1987. My wife Cindy (Class of ‘88) and I returned home over 25 years ago to raise our family in this community, because we know the people here have lots of love for each other and care deeply about kids. We’ve always been proud to be part of the Tahoma Family, and we will carry that pride with us into our next adventure.

Today I’m sharing the bittersweet news that 2023-24 will be my last school year as your superintendent. The end of this year will be 30 years in education for me. If you know Cindy and me, you know that Hawaii has been our happy place and we have been looking forward to relocating for a number of years. After many thoughtful discussions with our family we’ve decided it’s time for us to make that big step in our journey.

A fortunate part of this role is having countless opportunities to connect and partner with families, each with their unique needs and perspectives. Most importantly, I see how dearly you love your children, how fiercely you advocate for them, and how you encourage them to advocate for themselves. It’s a constant reminder that we made the right decision to grow our family in this community.

Moving forward, our school board will do its due diligence to find the best candidate to be your superintendent, and we will support that person in becoming fully prepared for the transition next summer. The board and district office will share more about that hiring process soon. Over the next 10 months, I remain fully focused on realizing our vision of quality learning, every day, in every classroom, for every child.

In partnership,

Mike Hanson, Superintendent
