Grand Celebration of Boat Racers Has Memories, Trophies, Articles

The placards pictured above are in Maple Valley’s Fire Engine Museum. Years ago they had been posted around town to advertise important Maple Valley events.

Cedar River Boat Racing has an historic past in Maple Valley. The Renton Chronicle reported on July 6,1950 that Cedar River had a 14-year race history. By that estimate, the first race occurred in 1936. Those who have documents, trophies, or photos that show otherwise should attend “Celebrate Them” and share their information.

Maple Valley Historical Society and Maple Valley Community Center are co-sponsoring “Celebrate Them – Cedar River Boat Racers”. It will be held at the Community Center on August 10, 1:00–3:00 pm.

Although no official agenda has been scheduled, the event will have a light lunch and an open mic to encourage audience participation. There will be display tables for artifacts, photo albums and trophies in addition to bulletin boards for posting anything from pictures to award ribbons. Richard Willing, who is on the very long list of racers, is sharing his 1972 photo album full of race history. Larry Johnson, an official race timekeeper, has supplied the historical society with two packets full of newspaper articles.

Those who plan to attend “Celebrate Them” can email their contact information and their association with racing to info@maplevalleyhistorical.com. Write “boat racing” in the subject line.
