City of Maple Valley Council Adopts Shopping Cart Ordinance

The City of Maple Valley City Council adopted Ordinance No. O-24-816 “Shopping Cart Regulation” at the March 25, 2024 City Council meeting.

The Council determined there is a need to add a chapter to the Maple Valley Municipal Code to address abandoned, discarded, or stolen shopping carts.

The primary purpose of this chapter is to motivate owners and operators of retail establishments to use means available to deter, prevent and mitigate the removal of shopping carts from their business premises and to provide for the prompt retrieval of lost, stolen or abandoned shopping carts.

This ordinance will also help improve the appearance of the city and promote public safety by making it a misdemeanor to unlawfully remove or possess shopping carts from retail establishments in the City of Maple Valley.

This regulation pertains to retail establishments that provide more than 50 carts for their customers. Businesses have 180 days to install security measures to prevent carts from leaving the premises and must install shopping cart identification signs as required by RCW 9A.56.270.
