Phone Scams on the Rise in Covington

Covington police have seen an uptick in phone scams in the past couple of weeks in which victims have actually followed through and lost money. Police would like to let the public know that they will never do the following:

•They do not call or text to have you pay traffic fines or tolls.

•They do not call or text to ask you to pay a relative’s bail.

•They will not ask for payment for missing jury duty.

•They do not call or text to have you pay to clear a warrant for your arrest.

If you receive a call from someone requesting money saying they are from the police department, you should just hang up. You should then call the non-emergency number 206-296-3311 to make a report. If you receive a text, report and block the number. Additionally, no legitimate retailer, bank or law enforcement officer will call and ask for payment in gift cards, crypto currency or in gold bars.
