Black Diamond Hoists the Pride Flag

On June 2, the Black Diamond city council raised the Pride Flag in honor of Pride month.

The annual flag raising first occurred in 2022, when Councilmembers, staff and residents came together as a community to support the LGBTQIA+ community. At the last council meeting, members voted 5 to 1 to continue the tradition.

“We raise the flag as a reminder that the fight continues,” said councilmember Tami Deady. The City of Black Diamond will fly the Pride Flag at Council Chambers for the entire month of June “in celebration and recognition of the legacy, contributions, and history of LGBTQIA+ Americans, and particularly Black Diamond residents,” according to the city proclamation.

Mayor John Adler added his voice of support. “As long as I’m mayor of this city, everybody is welcome.”

This was councilmember Sara Nielsen’s second year of being involved. “As a Christian, my faith teaches me that every person is created by God and worthy of dignity and respect,” she said. “As a mother, I know the power of unconditional love. And as a councilmember, I am committed to serving every member of our community with fairness and compassion.”

Councilmembers also approved a Juneteenth Proclamation, which stated in part that “the City of Black Diamond is growing in diversity…Therefore, the City of Black Diamond will continue to promote the spirit of Juneteenth with opportunities for civic engagement and celebration to commemorate diversity, equity, and inclusion of all residents of the City of Black Diamond, irrespective of their race, beliefs or preference.”
